Actress Anushka turned down the offer to play veteran actress Banumathi in the upcoming Tamil-Telugu bilingual Mahanati, a biopic on veteran actress Savitri with Keerthy Suresh essaying the veteran actress’ character.
Samantha Akkineni, who had earlier been signed up to play Banumathi, reportedly
backtracked after her marriage with Tollywood’s Naga Chaitanya in October last year
to play Banumathi’s character. Samantha, however, is part of the film as she plays
a journalist. Dulquer Salmaan plays Gemini Ganesah, husband of late Savitri, in the
film which has music by Mickey J Meyer.
Anushka was approached by director Nag Ashwin to play Banumathi in the film but she
apparently turned down the role as it was only an ‘extended guest appearance’ and
not the actual protagonist’s role.
The actress, who had played with aplomb the female protagonist in films such as
Arundhati, Rudramadevi, Baahubali and Bhaagamathie, has decided only to play
woman-centric characters in films and this is said to be the reason for turning
down the offer to play Banumathi in Mahanati.
